A Message from Committee co-chairs
Mark Scheuerman & Matthew Kunka

It is our honor to serve as co-chairs for AABA Criminal Law Committee.  We are thankful for all the leaders that went before us and the lessons we continue to learn from them.  We’re excited to announce that the Criminal Law Committee will meet quarterly at 5:00pm at Frost Law, 839 Bestgate Rd., Suite 400, Annapolis, MD 21401.  Please join us for our first meeting, Ethics and Old Fashioneds on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at 5:00 p.m.  We will enjoy Old Fashioneds and a discussion with Richard Berwanger, Partner at Frost Law, regarding the intersection of ethics and criminal law (fees, retainer agreements, and client communication).  The discussion will be informative for any practice area, and is free to attend.  Please send along any ideas for discussion or questions to us (Mark Scheuerman & Matthew Kunka).

The Criminal Law Committee is designed for practitioners to increase their individual expertise through thoughtful programming, to build strong relationships with fellow attorneys, and to dialogue with members of the bench to elevate the practice of criminal law for all litigants within the court system. Committee members come from a wide range of backgrounds and professional settings – large firms, small firms, solo practices, public service organizations, the judiciary and court staff, among others.  No matter where you practice, we hope you find a home here.
The strength of our committee lies in our relationships. Personal relationships allow us to build coalitions, to effectively process criticism, to develop greater understanding, and to seek advice.  We hope that committee members take the opportunity to look forward, to seek to become better advocates, while also reaching out to our fellow attorneys.  COVID taught us the value of relationships.  Although we may take opposing positions in court, we must treat each other with dignity, respect, and professionalism.
Over the course of the year, the committee will address different areas of the practice of criminal.   We urge all interested to jump in and get involved! The AABA also has a formal mentoring program which allows any attorney new to the practice to connect with more senior practitioners for practical questions and advice.
We have an opportunity to work cooperatively together to create a better practice. We thank you for this opportunity to learn from each of you, and trust that, together, we can address the challenges ahead.
