AABA Law Day in Schools
May 29, 2019 * Times and school locations vary
Law Day Committee Chair Marot Williamson cordially invites all AABA members to participate in our 2019 Celebration of Law Day. The purpose of Law Day is to educate and inspire students all over Anne Arundel County about the important role our courts have in shaping American history.
On Law Day, attorney volunteers across the country participate in outreach programs designed to educate and inspire the public about important areas of law that lift up the quality of life for all Americans. Law Day is officially May 1, but this year the AABA will hold its Law Day programs in local public high schools on May 29.
Our Law Day Committee is seeking volunteers to speak in schools about this year's Law Day theme, Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society, which focuses on these cornerstones of representative government and calls on us to understand and protect these rights to ensure, as the U.S. Constitution proposes, “the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity.” Speakers will engage students in a discussion about freeedom of speech and freedom of the press and ask them to consider questions such as: Should all speech be “free?” What is the role of government in regulating or protecting the press? Should speech or the press be constrained through laws or norms? Can a free society exist without free speech and free press?
The preparation for presenters should be minimal. The ABA's Law Day website contains planning guides and resources.
If you are interested in volunteering for Law Day, please send an email to Marot Williamson, Chair, AABA Law Day Committee, at email@example.com. The Law Day Committee thanks you!
