Presentation: The Trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, 1951; Truth and Consequence. Was Justice Served?
Presented by: Gardner, Stephenson, Mikoy Pupilage Group
On March 29, 1951, as the Cold War was heating up, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage by giving the Soviet Union secrets about the atomic bomb between 1944 and 1950. Judge Irving Kaufman sentenced each of them to death a week later. After two years of appeals, several requests for stay of execution and for presidential clemency, all of which were denied, both were executed on June 19, 1953. But the debate about their guilt or innocence did not abate.
In the decades that followed, much more evidence was released to the public, first the FBI files and interviews conducted with other connected participants. Later, as the 20th century ended and the 21st began, Soviet KGB files from the early Cold War era and the 1950-51 Grand Jury witnesses’ testimony were released.
This presentation will first present the original 1951 trial then examine the evidence subsequently made public and discuss whether that later evidence exonerates either or both Ethel and Julius.
