Joint Meeting and Presentation of the
Anne Arundel Bar Association and the
James C. Cawood Jr. Inn of Court

Presentation:  The Trial of John Scopes, 1925 (The “Monkey” Trial)

On July 21, 1925, John Scopes, a young high school teacher and football coach was convicted of a misdemeanor in Dayton, Tennessee by teaching the theory of the evolution of man contrary to the history of creation, as stated in the Bible. The criminal statute at issue was signed into law only earlier that year and Scopes was the first person charged and tried under it. But what on its surface appeared to be a local matter was far from it.  Divergent and disparate forces converged on the small Tennessee town for the Scopes trial.

The trial team for the prosecution was lead by former three-time Democratic Presidential nominee, William Jennings Bryan who was opposed by the renowned trial defense counsel, Clarence Darrow.  In fact, Darrow called Bryan as an adverse expert witness.

•  What were the disparate and divergent forces which descended on Dayton, Tennessee for the Scopes Trial in a perfect storm?
•  What local influences contributed to this national and international media circus?
•  How did the ACLU get involved with defending a local high school teacher, John Scopes?
•  Why did Clarence Darrow call his opposing counsel, William Jennings Bryan as his adverse expert witness on the Bible?•  Why does the legacy of the Scopes Trial continue to reverberate in our society almost a century later?
