AABA Committee Descriptions by Division Assignment
Administrative
Division Finance Committee: A standing committee; scope and duties contained in the Association by-laws, Article IV, Section 2, a, (3). Consists of Past Presidents, President, President-elect, Administrative Chair, Treasurer and Executive Director. The committee members prepare annual budget and oversee staff and office operations. Policy and By-laws Committee: Formulates and proposes additions and corrections to Association by-laws and policies when requested by President or Board of Trustees. Bar Association Historian: Major responsibilities include researching important "moments" in Association history and presenting anniversary certificates for 35-, and 50-year members of the Association. These presentations are made at the Annual Meeting. Community Service Division Lawyer Referral Service Committee: The Lawyer Referral Service was created in 1987 as a means to refer potential clients to participating members of the Association. This committee is responsible for reviewing procedures of the service, and recommending alterations and/or improvements to the Board of Trustees for implementation. Law Day Committee: Nationally, Law Day is May 1st. The Association celebrates "Law Week" with a week-long program of events including "Ask-A-Lawyer" booths; speakers in area schools and County Senior Centers; radio programs; Library programs; and more. This committee determines the activities for Law Week. Community Outreach Committee: The main objective is to involve members of the Association in community-wide activities such as the Thanksgiving Dinner and Backpack Drives, "Adopt-A-School" or Mock Trial. Community Law Forum Committee Chair: Glenn Klavans Pro Bono Committee Chair: Andy Vernick Member Services Division Membership Development Committee: A standing committee; scope and duties contained in the Association by-laws, Article IV, Section 2, a, (1). Basic responsibilities include programs to increase the membership of the association, and to review potential member service/benefit programs for recommendation to the Board of Trustees. Barrister Newsletter Committee: Sits as "editorial board" for the Association's monthly newsletter The Barrister. Responsible for determining content and seeking quality writers for the publication, and providing notice of upcoming events. The Barrister Newsletter Committee meetings are scheduled throughout the year. Alter Ego Committee: Responsible for coordinating the appointment of alter egos for all district and circuit court judges. Also responsible for facilitating communication between the alter egos, the membership and the judges. Professional Development Division Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee: Focuses on and expands Anne Arundel County's mediation programs and options for fee dispute resolution programs. Continuing Legal Education Committee: Coordinates all aspects of the Association's continuing legal education programs including: topics, speakers, locations, material, etc. The CLE Committee holds regular meetings to plan the continuing legal education offerings of the AABA. To join the committee, contact the committee co-chairs. Criminal Law Committee: A substantive committee that gathers periodically to discuss issues related to criminal law. New Lawyers Committee: Coordinates activities such as the Mentor Program and orientation, and develops programs which address the specific needs of new attorneys. Family Law Committee: This committee focuses on the unique legal needs of the domestic practitioner. The committee works with members of the bench, area psychologists and other professionals to help improve the way the legal community deals with domestic issues. The Family Law Committee meets on the third Tuesday of each month (except July & August) from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. . in the Attorney's Lounge of the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County. To join the committee, contact the committee chair. Judicial Balloting Committee: standing committee; scope and duties contained in the Association by-laws Article IV, Section 2, a, (2). Torts Committee Chair: Robb Cecil Social Programs Division Crab Feast Committee: Organizes all aspects of the Association's annual Crab Feast (this event is free for members). Crab Feast Golf Tournament Committee: Organizes annual golf outing prior to Crab Feast including course selection; sponsorship recruitment; prize purchases and presentations. Spring Golf Tournament Committee: Organizes annual Spring golf outing including course selection; sponsorship recruitment; prize purchases and presentations. Bar Weekend Committee: Plans annual Bar Weekend conference. Includes site selection; speaker/program selection; social event planning; special tour organization; and fundraising. Committee Chair: Jennifer Alexander Barristers' Ball Committee: Organizes the "Barrister's Ball" co-sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Bar Foundation. This charitable event, includes a dinner/dance and silent auction for a local charity. Lawyers' Softball League Committee: John Doud, Kemp Hammond and Jonathan Pasterick Development Division
